Pedal edema is one of the common side effects of dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers.
However this side effect is commonly missed by some clinicians and the patient sometimes has to go through unnecessary investigations and sometimes is prescribed unnecessary diuretics for that.
Among commonly available CCBs in Myanmar, the edema risk is highest with nifedipine and is also high with amlodipine.
The risk is low with cilnidipine. Studies showed edema rate is reduced with CCBs are combined with ACEi, ARB or diuretics for treating hypertension.
